WHAT IS FRAGILE X SYNDROME AND SYMPTOMS

Fragile X syndrome also known as FXS is a genetic condition that causes intellectual disabilities. People who have FXS shown symptoms of learning disabilities, social problems, behavior problems, developmental delays, anxiety, speech problems, sensitive to light and sound, tantrums, etc.

THE CAUSE

FXS is caused by changes in the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene, which was discovered by scientists. The fragile X mental retardation protein is normally formed by the FMR1 gene (FMRP). Normal brain development involves the presence of the FMRP gene. Furthermore, FXS is a sex linked dominant pattern. It’s considered a sex linkage if the mutated gene that caused  the disorder is located in the X chromosome either of the two chromosomes for males and females.

WHO

About  1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 6,000 to 8,000 females in the USA are reported, but it mostly has a deeper effect on males than females. FXS symptoms are in infants and toddlers. The risk of experiencing FXS symptoms like tremor, walking balance problems rises with age.  Ages 50 to 59 the chance is about 17%. Ages 60 to 69 about 38%. Ages 70 to 79 about 47% of severe FXS.

WHEN

Symptoms of FXS are usually found in toddlers and infants (35 to 37 months for boys and 42 months for girls) .

PROGNOSIS

People with fragile X syndrome have a normal life expectancy. Many of the people who are affected live an active lifestyle and are in good health. A variety of medical issues, such as ear infections, seizures, etc are more common in some individuals. Regular medical checkups and understanding of increased health risks can help affected people improve their condition.

TREATMENTS/THERAPIES

While there is no cure or single treatment for fragile X syndrome, there are medications and therapies that can help to reduce the symptoms. The most common type of therapy for kids is behavioral therapy because it helps them manage a ranges of emotions such as anxiety, sadness, anger, etc according to research. The best medication for FXS is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs can be effective agents in treating children with FXS at the age of three, who have aggressive tantrums or anxiety. There are also therapies to help children and adults walk, talk, and interact with other people. The best treatment option for people with FXS is to work with certified and well known  teachers, childcare providers, coaches, therapists, and close family members.
